Hawaii Requirements Overview:

Hawaii's (HI) CPA exam requirements are more favorable towards auditors as only 1500 chargeable hours are required for audit work to become licensed. All other accounting jobs require 2 years experience.

Education Requirements

What are the education requirements in Hawaii?

150 Hours Requirement

HI does not require 150 hours to sit, only to become licensed.

You are allowed to sit for the exam within 120 days from meeting the minimum educational requirements.

Accounting Course Requirements

HI requires a bachelors accounting degree from a board qualified university.

For non-accounting degrees, you must receive Bachelors from a school accepted by the board and receive at least 18 credit hours of accounting courses in intermediate/advanced accounting.

Business Course Requirements

HI does not have specific business class requirements

Business Law Requirements

HI does not have specific business law requirements.

Ethics Exam

Effective Jan 1, 2012, 4 hours of CPE on ethics is required.


Age & Residency Requirements

What are the age and residency requirements in Hawaii?

US Citizenship Requirement

You are NOT Required for Hawaii to be US Citizen to sit for the CPA exam, you need to be a US citizen or a US national that is authorized to work in the US in order to become licensed.

Residency Requirement

Hawaii does NOT require you to be a resident, employee, OR have an office in the state for you to take the CPA exam.

Minimum Age to Sit for the CPA Exam

Hawaii requires the applicant to be at least 18 prior to sitting for the CPA exam

Already Passed The CPA Exam in Hawaii? Here Are The CPA License Requirements

To become licensed in HI you are required to perform the following:

1) Education
-150 total semester hours
* 24 Hours of Accounting Classes. Must include intermediate/advanced level classes
* Business courses must include 24 upper-division classes

2) Experience
- 1,500 chargeable hours in auditing, or
- 2 year of supervised accounting experience (public or non-public) that must be verified by an active CPA licensee and the state board.
